The easiest way to defend against network-based worms coming from the Internet is to remove any links to the outside world. This would leave only the internal network vulnerable to attacks that originated inside. Obviously, this is not a viable solution for many, because the Internet’s communications links are important for business, research, and even our personal lives. This means that this avenue cannot be explored, though it has been used as a temporary measure by many network administrators during especially heavy onslaughts of worm attacks.

The second major line of defense is to move all exposed services from well-known ports to uncommonly used ports. This would mean, for example, running a Web server on a port that is different than the normal port 80/TCP port used. The major drawback to this approach is that the outside world, which needs to communicate with your site, will be unable to do so without assistance on your part. With that assistance, it is possible that worms could similarly use that information to exploit the vulnerabilities that still may reside on your servers but on different ports.

The next possible line of defense is to ensure that all systems are patched and configured properly at all times. The largest problem with this is the amount of time and effort required to ensure that these conditions are met. Vulnerabilities are constantly found in every piece of software written, and similar exposures exist in configurations of software packages and their combinations.

While there is no reason to not attempt to keep software up to date and configurations in line with best practices, these practices do not scale well to large sites, locations with decentralized management, or sites that must maintain high uptime and availability. Evaluating patches and upgrades takes time and can have a negative impact on performance or functionality that may be unacceptable to some sites. Some clear and defensive line could be advantage as free internet calls.

Instead, this part focuses on strategies and techniques that avoid hiding and evasion techniques that happen during disconnections from the Internet or moving service. These are also more practical and proactive approaches to network defense.

The fundamental principle using host-based defenses is to provide a deeper entrenchment of the defenses for any single system. With multiple defenses, the hurdles required to penetrate a system and cause damage increase. These defenses can fail in a number of ways, including misconfiguration, a weakness in the security application itself, or by using a channel different than the bypassed security guard was designed to defend.

The spread of worms to the desktop space parallels the rise in popularity of desktop systems and their increasing presence on the network. Although typically the domain of electronic-mail malicious software, or malware, several worms have used desktop systems to spread from host to host.

Workstations and desktops are usually maintained by their owners, meaning they receive less professional attention than servers do. UNIX workstations are simply too numerous for administrators to maintain as much as needed to stay on top of security issues. Desktops, typically Windows and Macintosh systems, are also often poorly maintained. In each case, usability and reliability are the overriding factors, not security.

However, an increasing shift in the personal computing world toward network-centric applications and setups means that these personal systems are now more accessible via the network. File-sharing systems, for example, are open by default to the world and have been used by some worms to spread from host to host. The Nimda worm, for example, used open file shares on Windows hosts to spread to its next victims. An additional vector for spread was through UNIX systems that act as file-sharing servers for Windows systems, although the Nimda worm did not affect these systems directly.

Words travel fast, and some of them reported that desktop and workstation computer are commonly infected or attack, these fact are increasing which made a good custom essay paper. By their sheer volume, desktop systems represent a tremendous opportunity for worms to spread to a large number of system. This can represent a large system for coordinated attacks (DDoS attacks, for example) or the spread of information.

As I promised in last article, today I’d like to continue our last discussion about worms traffic patterns, lets find out Disruption in Internet backbone activities as below.

Not entirely unexpected, as worms move, they are increasingly saturating the network on which they reside. Worms are typically indiscriminate in their use of networks and work to aggressively scan and attack hosts. This saturation can have consequences on the network infrastructure and use. As described below, Internet routing updates, network use, and intranet servers are all affected by worms during their life cycles.

Routing data
The Internet is a collection of networks with the backbone consisting of autonomous systems. These autonomous systems are routed to each other, with this routing data typically contained in the border gateway protocol.

The damage to the global BGP routing infrastructure brought about by Code Red and Nimda results from several factors. First, the volume of traffic is enough to disrupt the communication networks between routers, effectively choking some routers off of the Internet.

When this occurs, the routes to the networks serviced by these routers are withdrawn. Route flap, the rapid announcement and withdrawal of routes, can occur when these routers recover from the load and reintroduce themselves to the outside world and then are quickly overwhelmed again.

Routing flap can propagate through the Internet unless dampening measures are in effect, affecting global routing stability. Route flap was made significantly more prominent due to the activity of Code Red and, even more so, by Nimda, which acts far more aggressively and sends higher traffic rates.

The sustained connection from many worm sources is enough to raise the load on the routers to high levels, causing the routers to crash in many instances.

The consequences of this increased instability on the Internet were felt for several days, in proportion to the size of the instability introduced by the worm. While the Internet has been modeled and shown to be resilient to directed attacks at most of its core components, the magnitude of the load on the Internet, in addition to the directed attacks at core routers, led to instability.

Looking for research paper writers, those worms effect on internet backbone are worth for research and discuss as well.

Since computer technology were introduced, the other related supportive tools are also improving. One of it is Network, with network we could travel the world less then a second, there are no limit to far and no obstacle to hard.

Network itself rely on connection quality, which the first and still being used until now is cable. Cable itself also being used for common electric peripherals.

With cable of course the limits is the distance which are limited by the length of the cable. And it will cost more extra budget to buy long cable. Also in network we also know that we do need a hub or switch every 95 km to extend the network.

Those kind of problem were solve with wireless network devices. Without required lots of cable, and with simple installation, all we need is just configure the parameter, and also save more money to spend.

With wireless network, either way, required more safe security protection, why because the signal could be catched by anyone on the coverage area. Unlike the cable network which is install directly into specified users, wireless network divided by sequence of security, the most common security used are mac address filtering, and encripted password.

Thus, security just not enough, for better network coverage and connection access, limiting the bandwidth sent to users, and correct network planning are very helpful to establish stable network connection. For wireless network monitoring some program such as wireless survey software could help you monitor your network and control your network connection plans and its working in Mac environment as well.

In computer world, performance is something needed in order to get the job done more quickly, while precaution is something we need to do to avoid unwanted files.

Scanning an entire file for viruses is slow, and resulting on the computer performance itself. So how to solve it, because we do know scanning is also important things to do. It is referred to using the derogative term grunt scanning. There are four general approaches to improving scanner performance:

Reduce amount scanned. Scanning an entire file is not only slow, but increases the likelihood of false positives, as a signature may be erroneously found in the wrong place. Instead, scanning can be targeted to specific locations based on assumptions about viral behavior.
• Assuming that viruses add themselves to the beginning or the end of an executable file, searches can be limited to those areas. This is called top and tail scanning.
• More complicated executable formats allow an executable’s entry point to be specified. Scanning can be restricted to the program’s entry point and instructions reachable from that entry point.
• If the exact positions of all virus signatures are known, then scanning can be specifically directed to those areas. The assumption here is that all viruses are known, along with their behavior in terms of file location. This is in contrast to the more generic assumptions about virus locations made above. In conjunction with the entry point scanning above, this
is referred to dis fixed point scanning.
• Many viruses are small. The amount scanned in any location can be set according to the size of common viruses. For example, if most viruses are less than 8K in size, then the scanner may only examine 8K areas at the beginning and end of the executable.

Use of scanning-reduction techniques implies that the scanner will no longer see the complete input. The input to a scanning algorithm doesn’t have to be a faithful representation of a file’s contents, however. The algorithms work equally well on an abridged view of the input.
Of the performance-enhancing approaches, reducing the amount scanned is the only approach that directly affects the potential correctness of the result.

Another way to increase or maximize the performance of your computer and in the same time doing precaution is with desktop software monitoring, the software able to track down the software usage.

In previous articles we have discuss about browser battle, thus the battle are effecting on web design. Those browser development are potentially effecting on web design in both positive and negative side.

The browser war results in newer, better features that you can implement on your Web sites. The blistering pace of development leads to regular updates and bug fixes in browsers, as well as timely changes in the user interface, brought about by consumer comments. If you’ve spent much time surfing the Web, you’ve probably seen excellent uses for advanced HTML capabilities, such as tables, frames, and forms. The features allow users to view information in columns or cells, navigate sites using toolbars, and give and receive feedback.

You’ve probably also seen cool implementation of Java and animation such as pop up information when someone mouses over an image, the calculation of mortgage loans, and interactive games presented in Shockwave or Flash from Macromedia. Used in moderation, such advances can add much to the user’s Web experience.

As the software companies continue to try and outdo each other, both in market share and in the standardization process, end users often benefit. But this is not the case for every user, especially not for those who do not keep up with the latest software. That said, I’ll take a look at the challenges provided by the browser war.

The main challenge for the Web designer is designing a Web site that works for different browsers. To this end, the designer should keep several items in mind:
1. The latest official World Wide Web Consortium HTML standards, including HTML 4.01, XHTML 1, and CSS2.
2. Which features are supported by which browsers—not only the two main browsers but also the other browsers such as Opera, NeoPlanet, Lynx, WebTV, and wireless devices.
3. Which features are supported by which versions of the browsers. An early version of a browser does not support all of the features supported by the latest version.
4. Which types of browsers your audience will be using. If you are going to have a general interest or commercial Web site freely available to the public, you can expect all kinds of browsers. If you are designing a site that will only be available to people in your company, all of whom use Netscape Navigator 4.5 for Windows, you might be able to get away with a bit more.
5. Font design. Depending on how you choose to design your site, your audience can have the choice of which fonts and font sizes they use to view your site.
6. Image-free viewing. The audience may choose to come to your site with images turned off.
7. Whether the feature that requires certain browser capabilities is really worth the trouble. That is, whether the feature adds enough value to the site to justify locking out users whose browsers do not support it.
8. Whether another way supported by more browsers exists to achieve a desired result. (You may not always come up with an alternate method, but it is good practice to try.)
9. The likely speed of the connection your viewers will use. I haven’t discussed speed, but it helps to know if many of your users are connecting via a 56Kbps modem (which is likely if your Web site is publicly accessible) or via a T1 connection (which may be the case over a closed, corporate intranet).

Although it may seem daunting, staying on top of these issues helps you make informed decisions for your design. Once you start considering these factors, it becomes second nature.
