If your website sells products or service, you more than likely already know what website shopping cart software is. And if you do not, here is a brief overview explaining it all. Consider the following points.

1. For more of technical people, shopping cart software is a set of scripting instructions that monitors and records each item that a user selects to buy until he/she checks out. In simpler terms, it helps users shop on a website with convenience.
2. Although it does play a part in the financial transactions, it is not completely involved into it. Shopping cart software plays the front end role to gather payment details from the user and eventually send it to the payment gateway via a secure connection layer. The payment gateway is a different service completely.
3. Shopping carts play a pivotal role in recording the user selected products, prize calculation, shipping charges calculation, and discount calculation. Also, as an owner you are also provided with an admin panel wherein you can change the preferences and features of the cart. In other words, you can control the way the users can use your cart.
4. There are numerous shopping cart applications available in the market. Although the availability is good, but too many choices can sometimes be troublesome. With so many choices come both the good and bad choices. You must therefore be very careful while choosing your cart. It must be easy to use, bug free, and customizable.
5. There are also some free carts available in the market. However, nothing truly comes free in this world. Most of the free applications will have limited features or may not be best of the products. You may do well with a free product initially, but what later. Also, it is not a good idea to change your application as it can be distracting for the users. It is like changing the location of your shop.
It is, therefore, more logical to opt for a premium cart application which provides most of the desired features. Also, you would get the newer releases of the same application to cope up with what is latest in the market. There are many good premium shopping carts available on the internet, so see what you think.

People want to see what they buy, try before they buy instead of taking your word for it and know where to turn to if something goes wrong. These are some of the things you should consider when thinking of how to sell software online and how to present it.

The list below offers tips on what you should do:
•	Have real users test your software product. You may think you have created an easy-to-use intuitive piece of software, yet in the end it is not you who decides this. If you plan on selling software online successfully, you need to have real people test it to see how quick they understand how it works and learn how to use it. Not to mention their help in squashing the bugs you might have never noticed on your own, thus making your product as error free as possible.
•	Provide an accurate description of the software product. You need a clear and short description of what the software is and what it is used for, so that people can see whether they need it or not. Additional details should be provided somewhere else for those who really wish to know more.
•	Make screenshots available. They say a picture makes a thousand words, so screenshots are a very helpful tool when selling software online. The screenshots tell the users if the software product has a well designed interface and let them get a good look at the menu bars and toolbars, for instance, which helps them quickly assess whether the required functionality is there.
•	Use a try before you buy approach. Don’t just say your software is easy to use. If your software product is as easy to use as you say it is, then why not let people see that for themselves? Offer them the option to download of a copy of your software and try it before asking them to pay for it.
•	Specify supported OS-es and licensing type. A list of supported operating systems is as necessary when selling software online as when selling it in a box in a traditional store. It has to be put in an easy to spot place for potential customers to find out at a glance whether the product will work on their computers or not. Adding other system requirements would be a good idea, too. Do specify the type of licensing for your software product (i.e. freeware, shareware etc).
•	Include a help file and support details. Your software product has to have some documentation explaining users how to use it, be it in form of a help file or an online manual either included with the product or that can be downloaded separately. People also need to know where to reach you in case they need support, so do not forget to include such details (an e-mail address, and maybe a phone number, too).

Letting people see the product (by screenshots) and try it before they buy, providing help files with your software and support when necessary, properly testing it with real users to make sure it is easy to use are the things that you should have on your to-do list if you plan on selling software online and be successful at it.

Cross selling can be used as an effective tool of getting additional revenue from clients, offering them similar or complementary products. Studies show it costs four times more to gain a new customer than it does to keep an old one.

Cross selling involves five fundamentals:
•	You have to know your products very well.
•	You have to know your clients. To get the best results identify which customers are your best target.
•	Ask questions and listen for clues.
•	Pay attention to clients needs and only suggest relevant products.
•	Suggest, don’t impose. These way clients will feel comfortable and more likely to accept your offer.

Most of the time, cross selling is a natural process, involving a simple operation: telling customers about your products. In software marketing, the publisher needs to establish which software product can be correlated with another one and be sold together as a package deal. Both the selection and the price can be based on several customer and product criteria, which should be set up before deciding on using the cross selling technique. These bundles may be added to the online shopping cart or advertised as a special software promotion on the site.

Successful cross selling can be achieved by applying several rules:
•	Right timing. Don’t push sales if it seems the client doesn’t have the financial resources at that moment. Try to find out what the clients budget is and make your offer accordingly.
•	Relevance. Suggesting too many software products unrelated to the original one may overwhelm the client and lead to failure.
•	Post recommendations on the site. Professionals, experts or other customers may post their opinion and their recommendations on the site. It can show up as a list of related items bought by other customers that purchased the same product.
•	Place cross selling items throughout your site, where they can help shoppers learn about your software products and business. Try mixing and matching different items to see which combinations work best.
•	Offer a range of prices: low cost items may be considered impulse buys, but the clients may also purchase higher priced items that fit their needs.
The most important aspect in cross selling is customer satisfaction with the first software product they purchase, alongside with price and how well additional products fit their needs. In order for cross selling to work, the focus should be on the customer, not on pushing a certain software program. Before talking about additional products or services, the customer’s problems must be solved. Also, the customer needs to know how useful is the product you’re trying to sell in the first place.

What’s the most important downside of cross selling? Annoying clients to the point they leave without buying anything. This occurs if you continue to sell after the customer says he’s not interesting or when you’re pushing a product that’s not useful to the customer. In the end, combining customer service and cross selling will lead to increased online software sales.

You want to sell more software from your website? How do you make the client truly understand your product and trust it and your company enough to pay the price? Tips on what you should do.

Selling software online is not an easy task. How do you make the client truly understand your product and trust it and your company enough to pay the price? Like it or not, it’s very similar to selling face to face: the first impression may be decisive for the client’s future actions. Online, the website is your face.

It has to be comprehensible and easy to use. Here are a few tips on how your website should be to sell software better:
•	It has to look professional and attractive at the same time.
You don’t have to show off your web designer skills. Too many colours, graphics, flash animations or drop-down boxes can only tire the visitors and make them leave faster. Fewer graphic will also make the site load faster. At the same time, it shouldn’t be dull, so it needs to be somewhere in the middle.
•	Make sure your message comes across loud and clear.
In order to sell more software, information about software products must be easy to find, easy to follow and the same goes for the order process. Since most information is in the text, make it easy to read. Some coloured backgrounds make the text difficult to read, like purples, orange and reds. On the other hand, dark backgrounds may have a depressing effect on the visitor’s mood. The text colour is very important. Keep in mind that different browsers show colours differently, so don’t go crazy with it. It’s better to use Plain fonts, like Arial, Times New Roman, Verdana and Courier, because they’re easier to read. Fancier fonts may be used for headlines, but not full text. Remember though that sans serif fonts are easier to read on screen.
•	Easy navigation is law.
Make sure there’s a link to the homepage at the top left of every page, except the homepage itself. Be careful not to have dead end from which the visitor can’t find their way back to where they came from. Place the most important links in the top part of each page. Clearly mark read and unread links, preferably using standard colours.
•	Base the site’s hierarchy on your customers needs.
Don’t make them search the entire site before they find information about products, prices and payment methods.
•	Don’t make pages too long.
A web shouldn’t be more than 23 normal pages lengths, as no one likes an endless scrolling. If you have information for more than that, divide it into several pages with short information clips on the main index page leading to the second page.
•	Check all the links on your website to make sure they lead to a page.
Tags from the navigation menu must be representative for what that page is about.
•	Serve friendly error messages.
Don’t let the visitors see a page with 404 not found written on it. Put your creativity to good use. Error messages may include navigation to documents that do exist, a search box or a contact email address.
•	Have a privacy statement and testimonials.
Potential clients must feel confident dealing with you. Having a separate page to express your policy towards their email addresses, how you accept orders and gather information, who has access to information and how you use that information will help you sell more software. Also make a separate page for comments from satisfied customers. Offer to include links to the customers websites in return for using their comments.
•	Contact information or a link to it should be on every page.
If customers need additional information about the product, contact information like a phone number and an email address should be easy to find on the website. Let people know the hours and days of operation and the time needed to answer their requests. Give a contact name; it makes people have more faith that someone will actually read their message.
•	Set up a frequently-asked-questions (FAQ) page.
Base it on real questions your customers had in the past.

In 1983, Fred Cohen coined the term “computer virus”, postulating a virus was “a program that can ‘infect’ other programs by modifying them to include a possibly evolved copy of itself.” Mr. Cohen expanded his definition a year later in his 1984 paper, “A Computer Virus”, noting that “a virus can spread throughout a computer system or network using the authorizations of every user using it to infect their programs. Every program that gets infected may also act as a virus and thus the infection grows.”

Using that explanation, we can see that viruses infect program files. However, viruses can also infect certain types of data files, specifically those types of data files that support executable content, for example, files created in Microsoft Office programs that rely on macros. Compounding the definition difficulty, viruses also exist that demonstrate a similar ability to infect data files that don’t typically support executable content – for example, Adobe PDF files, widely used for document sharing, and .JPG image files. However, in both cases, the respective virus has a dependency on an outside executable and thus neither virus can be considered more than a simple ‘proof of concept’. In other cases, the data files themselves may not be infectable, but can allow for the introduction of viral code. Specifically, vulnerabilities in certain products can allow data files to be manipulated in such a way that it will cause the host program to become unstable, after which malicious code can be introduced to the system. These examples are given simply to note that viruses no longer relegate themselves to simply infecting program files, as was the case when Mr. Cohen first defined the term. Thus, to simplify and modernize, it can be safely stated that a virus infects other files, whether program or data.

In contrast to viruses, computer worms are malicious programs that copy themselves from system to system, rather than infiltrating legitimate files. For example, a mass-mailing email worm is a worm that sends copies of itself via email. A network worm makes copies of itself throughout a network, an Internet worm sends copies of itself via vulnerable computers on the Internet, and so on.

Trojans, another form of malware, are generally agreed upon as doing something other than the user expected, with that “something” defined as malicious. Most often, Trojans are associated with remote access programs that perform illicit operations such as password-stealing or which allow compromised machines to be used for targeted denial of service attacks. One of the more basic forms of a denial of service (DoS) attack involves flooding a target system with so much data, traffic, or commands that it can no longer perform its core functions. When multiple machines are gathered together to launch such an attack, it is known as a distributed denial of service attack, or DDoS.

While purists draw a firm distinction between viruses, worms, and Trojans, others argue that it is merely a matter of semantics and give the virus moniker to all viruses, worms, and Trojans. The term malware, a.k.a. malicious software, can most easily be used to describe viruses, worms and Trojans while satisfying both arguments.

Malware is an even more appropriate term when one considers spyware, adware, and and browser hijacking techniques that may not fit in any of the aforementioned virus, worm, or Trojan classifications. Thus, malware can be defined as any program, file, or code that performs malicious actions on the target system without the user’s express consent. This is in contrast to Sneakyware, which can best be described as any program, file, or code that the user agrees to run or install without realizing the full implications of that choice. One of the best examples of Sneakyware was Friendly Greetings, a greeting-card trick that exploited users’ willingness to say Yes without reading the licensing agreement. By doing so, they were blindly agreeing to allow the same email to be sent to all contacts listed in their address book.

Achieving good computer security can seem like a daunting task. Fortunately, following the few simple steps outlined below can provide a good measure of security in very little time.
Use antivirus software and keep it updated. You should check for new definition updates daily. Most antivirus software can be configured to do this automatically.

Install security patches. Vulnerabilities in software are constantly being discovered and they don’t discriminate by vendor or platform. It’s not simply a matter of updating Windows; at least monthly, check for and apply updates for all software you use.

Use a firewall. No Internet connection is safe without one. Firewalls are necessary even if you have a dial-up Internet connection – it takes only minutes for a a non-firewalled computer to be infected.

Secure your browser. Many labor under the dangerous misconception that only Internet Explorer is a problem. It’s not the browser you need to be concerned about. Nor is it a matter of simply avoiding certain ‘types’ of sites. Known, legitimate websites are frequently being compromised and implanted with malicious javascript that foists malware onto visitors’ computers. To ensure optimum browsing safety, the best tip is to disable javascript for all but the most essential of sites – such as your banking or regular ecommerce sites. Not only will you enjoy safer browsing, you’ll be able to eliminate unwanted pop-ups as well.

Take control of your email. Avoid opening email attachments received unexpectedly – no matter who appears to have sent it. Remember that most worms and trojan-laden spam try to spoof the sender’s name. And make sure your email client isn’t leaving you open to infection. Reading email in plain text offers important security benefits that more than offset the loss of pretty colored fonts.

Treat IM suspiciously. Instant Messaging is a frequent target of worms and trojans. Treat it just as you would email.

Avoid P2P and distributed filesharing. Torrent, Kazaa, Gnutella, Morpheus and at least a dozen other filesharing networks exist. Most are free. And all are rife with trojans, viruses, worms, adware, spyware, and every other form of malicious code imaginable. There’s no such thing as safe anonymous filesharing. Avoid it like the plague.

Keep abreast of Internet scams. Criminals think of clever ways to separate you from your hard earned cash. Don’t get fooled by emails telling sad stories, or making unsolicited job offers, or promising lotto winnings. Likewise, beware of email masquerading as a security concern from your bank or other eCommerce site.

Don’t fall victim to virus hoaxes. Dire sounding email spreading FUD about non-existent threats serve only to spread needless alarm and may even cause you to delete perfectly legitimate files in response.

Remember, there’s far more good than bad on the Internet. The goal isn’t to be paranoid. The goal is to be cautious, aware, and even suspicious. By following the tips above and becoming actively engaged in your own security, you’ll not only be protecting yourself, you’ll be contributing to the protection and betterment of the Internet as a whole.
